Thomas Hirsch or in Spanish, Tomás René Hirsch Goldschmidt, was born on July 19, 1956 and is a Jewish politician from Santiago, Chile. He is on the Chilean left side of politics and is the leader of the Together We can Do More presidential election. He won 5.4% of the vote In 2005 when he ran under this campaign.

In 1983 Hirsch helped found the Humanist Party of Chile. This party has its roots in the ideologies of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. It stresses nonviolence and passive resistance. The Humanist Party is founded on five principles. They value human life over money and power. They respect every human being and see them as equally valuable where no one person is above the other. Humanists value freedom of thought. The Humanist Party stress the development of alternatives to neo-liberal economic models. Last, humanists stress the use of non-violence.

The Humanist Party became the first legal party in the country in 1987 under dictator Augusto Pinochet. Hirsch served as president from 1994 to 1999. He is also one of he founders for Coalition of Parties for Democracy, and he served in New Zealand in the early ninety’s under the authority of Patricio Aylwin. A year later he and his party fell out of touch with the CPD. After there separation he ran for a seat in Chile’s Congress in 1997 and then in 1999 for president. He was unsuccessful in both attempts at being the leader for the Humanist Party.

Hirsch was also the lead speaker for the victims of Pinochet’s regime. He would often go out into public media and announce on international media outlets that the former dictator should be tried for his crimes. He argued that Pinochet committed many acts against the Geneva Code and should be imprisoned for crimes against humanity. He also was very outspoken about Ricardo Lagos government for releasing Pinochet to house arrest in London where he gets to live a peaceful life. Hirsch has repeatedly said that the government of Chile has used its military might and political alliances to protect such a criminal. Hirsch is outspoken against the political systems of Chile and claims that many of the political parties are simply the continuation of corrupt government policies that do not address the needs of the public. Hirsch has called the Coalition of Parties for Democracy lazy and lackadaisical in their disregard for the needs of Chilean citizens.

As part of his humanist ideals, Hirsch has tried to revolutionize Chilean society by implanting and calling for changes in the political machines. He wants the economy to behave more egalitarian and socialistic unlike the dictatorships that have had power. Tomas has tried to create a more democratic society for Chilean people, so they can have a vote in their government and make gains in their society. For this reason, he is an adamant supporter of Chilean citizens ad natives such as the Mapuches. He has been described as being a communist and having connections with the Communist Party of China. His Together We Can Do More campaign is supported by the progressives and right-wing part of Chilean society. Hirsch believes in an end to the Chilean dictatorship and the end of corrupt political parties. For his outspoken stance, he has been arrested on numerous occasions by Chilean police.
